A survey on university and college student travel patterns in the Ottawa-Gatineau region’s most popular travel hubs is being conducted Nov. 4 to Nov. 29.

Carleton is helping to get the survey out by contacting students through their email accounts.

Research company R.A. Malatest & Associates Ltd. is carrying out the survey for TRANS, a transportation planning committee in Ottawa.

Results will be used to discuss subjects such as the extension of the O-Train to the airport and the light rail transit line to the Canadian Tire Centre, according to Ahmad Subhani, senior project manager at TRANS.

The survey focuses on transit around four main areas: post-secondary schools, hotels, intercity transportation sites, and recreational spots.

Intercity transportation sites include the airport and VIA Rail stations, while the Ottawa Convention Centre and casino are a few of the recreational spots being identified.

Subhani said the survey’s target goal is to reach out to at least five per cent of the population.

“[Carleton’s] estimated enrolment is 25,000 and we are looking for a 1,200 completion,” Subhani said. “Good news is we’ve already completed 1,450 . . . which is well beyond our target, so we are quite happy with it.”

The surveys are being administered on location and online, and are both voluntary and confidential, he said.

Questions are on topics that include demographics and trip data, such as how a person arrives and leaves their planned destinations.

“Once we finish the survey the next step for sure is to analyse the data, and then we will disseminate it to the public,” Subhani said.
