Carleton will see the arrival of a new food truck style vendor in 2014 according to David Van Dyk, general manager of Carleton’s food service provider, Aramark Canada.

Van Dyk described the venue, which will be called 101s, as “the first indoor food truck” and said the new venue will be located in the former A&W space within the University Centre Food Court.

“We actually cut a truck in half and the facade of the concept will be half of the truck,” Van Dyk said via email.

The new venue will be open in January 2014 in time for the second semester and will serve burgers, shakes, and poutine.

Van Dyk said he has been speaking with local food trucks about possibly having vendors visit the Carleton campus in a similar style to York University’s “Food Truck Tuesdays.”

He said Carleton’s previous experiences with food trucks have been positive.

“We did bring food trucks on campus for the football games this year,” he said. “It helped service crowds in an area where it would be difficult for us to deliver on a great guest experience.”

Many universities have welcomed food trucks to their campuses recently. The University of Ottawa has contracted food trucks on campus, and the University of British Columbia has their own truck that is run by university food services.

“We are continuing to look at unique opportunities to create a great dining experience for students at Carleton,” Van Dyk said.
