A three-level parking garage spanning the O-Train tracks will add approximately 600 parking spaces at the north end of Carleton’s campus.

Construction began on May 10 and is expected to finish by the end of December, project manager Jared Steenbakkers said.

The structural components of the garage spanning the O-Train tracks between parking lots six and seven will be complete by September 2013, allowing the O-Train to operate, he said.

The new facility will provide additional parking for staff, students, faculty, and special events using the same pay-and-display system as the other parking lots on campus, according to assistant director of university safety Brian Billings.

The garage will have have three levels and approximately 600 parking spaces, he said.

Digging and relocating water mains, sewers, and establishing electricity systems for the new structure has taken up existing parking spots in lot six, Billings said.

“Over the next two to three weeks you should see some of the construction [material] being tailed back [in lot six],” he said, estimating the loss at about 50 spaces.

The majority of lost spaces will be in lot seven, he said.

“[Parking lot seven] is how they’re going to access the facility once they get it spanned across the tracks,” he said.

“Parking lot seven is basically our overflow lot anyways,” he said. “We did have about 200 student permits that were parking in there and during construction we’re probably going to have about 350 spaces available.”

Billings said there will be traffic congestion at the Bronson end of campus due to construction vehicles entering and leaving the site.
