The Carleton University Academic Staff Association (CUASA), the union representing 850 faculty and librarians on campus, has officially ratified their collective agreement with the university.

A news bulletin released by the Carleton Human Resources website said the three-year agreement will mean an across-the-board increase in salaries of approximately 1.8 per cent annually.

“We had a list of situations that we wanted to address. We reopened the clauses and we addressed those, and wage increase was part of the whole package,” said Chantal Dion, the president of CUASA.

Dion said there was more in ratifying the contract than just the wage increases negotiated. In the contract bargaining, CUASA was also able to shed light on previous issues, such as sabbatical leave, special arrangements, tenure, and promotion process.

“We’ve clarified on a few items, one of them being the workload issue to make it clearer that faculty across the board at Carleton will be teaching less than 2.5 courses per year,” she said. “This is a solid, clear contract for both parties, and overall we’re happy with that.”

Dion said she believes CUASA’s next steps will be working with the results of the ratification.

“[Our challenge now] is in implementing, because we have established the ‘in theory’, and now we’re translating into the reality,” she said.
