Over the past six weeks, the Department of University Safety has received 12 reports of property theft on campus. In the majority of cases, the owner has left valuables unattended momentarily, and returned to find they have been stolen. Most commonly stolen items include laptop computers and backpacks. With the pressure of upcoming exams, students may find themselves easily distracted while studying. Students are encouraged to be aware of their surroundings and not to leave valuables unattended.

On Nov. 28, the Carleton Student Engineering Society (CSES) set up a local area network, challenging students to spend 24 sleepless hours playing video games, all in the name of charity.

The money generated from ticket revenue was donated to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, giving video gamers a guilt-free excuse to play their favourite games all day. Participants could choose from a list of available games or share the games already downloaded on their own computers.

Jessica Chin  Last week’s annual general meeting of the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS) led to serious contention over new referendum bylaws that would affect students’ ability to leave the organization. The CFS, which represents students from over 80 post-secondary schools across Canada, held their annual general meeting Nov. 25-28.  Motion six, proposed by Carleton’s own Graduate Students’ Association (GSA), made three major changes to the CFS membership referendum bylaws. 

Vice-president (communications) Andrew Loebus at the Model United Nations Society at Carleton said “this year was, by far, our best year.”

He is referring to Carleton’s overall results at a recent Queen’s University mock United Nations simulation, where Carleton delegates won eight awards and defeated their long-time rivals, University of Toronto.

All Internet traffic on campus at Carleton is not treated equally, according to Denis Levesque of Computing and Communication Services (CCS).

Levesque, the CCS assistant director of operations and infrastructure, explained that certain types of Internet traffic such as regular Internet browsing and e-mail are given the highest priority.

“Peer-to-peer or gaming-type traffic will take capacity as it's available and as long as the capacity is not being consumed by higher priority traffic.”
