Worldwide, obesity is becoming a rising epidemic and fattism is coming to light as a new form of prejudice against overweight individuals. Obesity is associated with multiple health complications and there have been efforts to combat the epidemic without targeting overweight individuals.

The City of Ottawa's recent audit, budget and finance committee meeting Nov. 27 recommended to council to axe funding previously earmarked for a crime prevention report created by a Carleton professor.

In the city's 2010 draft budget, $510,000 was originally allocated to funding initiatives brought forth by crime reduction research centre Crime Prevention Ottawa (CPO). One such initiative was professor Katharine Kelly's Ottawa Youth Gang Report, which would address the growing problem of gangs among youth.

Carleton’s Michel Dumontier, an associate professor of bioinformatics, is part of a Canadian team of biomedical researchers that received a $927,000 donation from Canada’s Advanced Research and Innovative Network (CANARIE).

CANARIE’s donation to the Canadian Bioinformatics Resources As Semantic Services (C-BRASS), will be used to develop better methods for researchers to access and share information.

The Ontario government’s new harmonized sales tax (HST), to be implemented in July 2010, is receiving a mixed response at Carleton because it’s going to affect student and university expenses.
