Carleton librarian Margaret Haines couldn’t wipe the smile off her face Nov. 30, as representatives of the Institute of Ismaili Studies in London, England presented the Carleton library with more than 60 books covering a variety of topics concerning Islam.

“This is just a wonderful collection to add, so we’re delighted to accept it,” Haines said.

The donation, worth approximately $3,000, was geared to help enhance Carleton’s minor in Muslim studies, and to help establish Carleton’s Centre for the Study of Islam.

The city’s audit, budget and finance committee voted to eliminate the proposed funding for a university transit pass at a city council meeting Nov. 27.

Carleton University Students' Association president Erik Halliwell said this battle is far from over. 

“We will absolutely be asking council to revisit this, for sure,” Halliwell said. “This proposal would cut in half the costs for a bus pass for students.

During the week of Nov. 22-27 the Carleton Disability Awareness Centre (CDAC) was hard at work doing its job building awareness. The method was simple: take a bunch of able-bodied students and staff, give’em wheelchairs and let them loose. Naturally the moment I heard about this I rushed to CDAC to scoop up my wheelchair.

I love football.

More specifically, I love Canadian football. In the interest of full disclosure, I should say I am from Saskatchewan, where the Roughriders are always number one, even when they are losing.

So imagine my disappointment when I came to study in Ottawa, only to find an empty stadium at Lansdowne Park. The Renegades had played their last game in 2005. I arrived one year too late. Totally lame.

Ottawa’s transit committee voted Nov. 6 in favour of subsidizing a universal bus pass for post-secondary students. This U-Pass, as it would be called, would give all full-time students in the city access to the entire OC Transpo system for $145 per semester. This was an exciting offer that most student leaders were happy to report back to their constituents.
