Rideau River Residence Association (RRRA)

Promise: Put a greater focus on mental health.

Yes: RRRA president Hyder Naqvi said via email that they have reached out to existing resources that are on campus and applied the focus to students living on residence and that they have “supportive events for exam season.”

Promise: Bring back intramural sports in the Residence House Cup.

Yes: RRRA partnered with Carleton Athletics and had a soccer tournament, where the second floor of Lanark was declared the winner, Naqvi said.

He also said they’re looking forward to events in the winter, where they can incorporate the canal and celebrate RRRA’s fiftieth anniversary.

Promise: Provide free feminine hygiene products.

Yes: Naqvi stressed how this was a big campaign promise they had, because “we feel these products should be easily accessible.”

According to Naqvi, free feminine hygiene products are available for anyone to pick up in the RRRA office.

Promise: Replace Mac Daddy’s in Oasis.

Yes: La Cocina, a Mexican food restaurant, took over the Mac Daddy’s space in Oasis in September.

In a previous interview with The Charlatan, Naqvi said “there was a lot of interest” in replacing Mac Daddy’s with a burrito restaurant.

“I’ve seen a lot more students go to La Cocina rather than more students that went to Mac Daddy’s,” he said in the article.

Although the previous RRRA executive—which included Naqvi—promised to remove Mac Daddy’s last year, Naqvi said delays at Aramark caused the project to be postponed until this year.

Promise: Introduce live music in Oasis.

Ongoing: “We are discussing how to set up such an event with interested partners,” Naqvi said, since it will be a new setup.

Promise: Make student jobs more accessible.

Ongoing: RRRA has reached out to local job providers and has shared job openings on their Facebook page, Naqvi said, and added that they hope to continue to expand this.

Promise: Installing windows that can be opened in Glengarry House.

Ongoing: RRRA has received confirmation from the university administration that they plan to begin work on Glengarry in May 2018, according to Naqvi.

“There have been delays in setting up this process, but now all necessary university departments have given their approval for the project,” he said.

Naqvi explained that work can only take place during the summer semester and with that limited time, it means that only half the windows will be completed by the end of summer, with the remaining windows being installed in 2019.
