The Rideau River footbridge that connects Carleton University to Vincent Massey Park will be temporarily closed from July 6 to 13 for maintenance.

The City of Ottawa will close the 65-meter steel bridge so crews can perform ‘necessary work’. The university said that sections of the pedestrian pathways on Carleton’s campus near the bridge will also temporarily close.

The $5 million bridge officially opened in June 2024 as a part of Carleton’s Transportation Plan and the Stage 2 Light Rail Transit project, and is open to pedestrians and cyclists.

The multi-use bridge connects the university to surrounding neighbourhoods and the 71-acre green space in Vincent Massey Park.

Last month, the city waterproofed the bridge, aiming to provide better traction in wet conditions and preserve it through all four seasons. The bridge unexpectedly closed in December 2024 due to the lack of winter maintenance.

With the temporary closure approaching, the university is advising everyone to respect traffic, pedestrian signs and barricades.
