Students were locked out of residences Oct. 11 because of malfunctioning keypad systems.

Carleton uses the CBORD keypad system for all of its residence buildings, and all were affected by the system failing, according to university safety’s community liaison Mark Hargreaves.

The malfunctions started at approximately 8:15 p.m., Hargreaves said, at which point students were locked out of residence.

Students on the eighth floor of Lennox and Addington were reportedly locked in, Hargreaves said, because of the double swipe entry in the building.

Campus safety unlocked the entire building shortly after the report came in, Hargreaves said. They followed by unlocking the rest of the residence buildings.

The key cards were functioning again by around 10:24 p.m., Hargreaves said.

“My understanding is that the software failed,” housing director David Sterritt said.

Rideau River Residence Association president Will Cathcart said having residence doors unlocked is a concern.

“From a safety perspective, for students, that’s kind of a scary thought,” he said.
