Lifeguards at Carleton’s swimming pool pulled an unconscious teenager from the water early on Sept. 15.

Carleton’s director of university safety Allan Burns said the 14-year-old girl was participating in a swim club when she lost consciousness.

He said lifeguards removed the girl from the pool just after 7 a.m. and successfully performed CPR.

The teenager regained consciousness and was responsive by the time paramedics arrived, Burns said, and she was transported to the CHEO.

He said the university has not received any follow-up information about the girl’s condition.

Although these types of incidents are rare at Carleton, Burns said the lifeguards did an exceptional job.

“I think the lifeguards handled this situation with exceptional professionalism and saved this girl’s life.”
