Who are we?
The Charlatan is Carleton University’s independent newspaper. Run by students for students, the paper has been providing the Carleton community with news and entertainment for more than 75 years.

Job Description: Managing Editor
The Charlatan Managing Editor is a creative part-time position with influence in administrative aspects of our paper. The Managing Editor will report to the Editor-in-Chief and have a close relationship with the editorial staff. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Maintain consistent and clear communication with the Editor-in-Chief and section editors regarding editorial content, events and deadlines (such as those for print special editions, submissions of eligible voter lists and special edition layout, among other tasks to be determined upon hire);
  • Coordinate layout and pages for print special editions, subject to final approval by the Editor-in-Chief;
  • Maintain an active and ongoing list of which sections meet expectations in terms of number of published articles per week;
  • Coordinate weekly teambuilding activities for all staff members;
  • Attend weekly editorial staff meetings;
  • Coordinate with the office managerexecutive director to consult CUSA about voter turnout and plan a campaign for a student levy increase in the future;
  • Coordinate monthly volunteer outreach activities, including an annual fundraiser;
  • Support editorial staff in decisions of timeliness, newsworthiness, and style;
  • Support Editor-in-Chief in employee evaluations;
  • Maintain a regular office presence and office hours, to be determined upon hire;
  • Meeting all deadlines set by the Editor-in-Chief;
  • Other reasonable duties as requested by the Board of Directors or the Editor-in-Chief.
  • Experience working at the Charlatan is an asset.

Characteristics of a strong applicant include:

Other Important Information:
The position requires part-time work beginning in September.

Job Type:

  • Part-time, approx. 10 hours every week

Salary:

  • $300, paid every two weeks

Schedule:

  • Monday to Friday, flexible working hours

Experience:

  • At least one (1) year of involvement in the Carleton community

Location:

  • Remote or Ottawa, Ont.
