The Charlatan is Carleton University’s independent newspaper. Run by students for students, the paper has been providing the Carleton community with news and entertainment for more than 80 years.
Job Description: Graphics Editor
The Charlatan Graphics Editor is a creative part-time position with influence on visual aspects of our paper. The Graphics Editor will report to the Editor-in-Chief and have a close relationship with the editorial team. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Create graphics that are timely and reflect the paper’s coverage.
- Co-ordinating with section editors to determine graphic needs for articles as early as possible, including setting deadlines for graphics requests;
- Recruiting, training, supervising and maintaining contact with potential graphics volunteers;
- Attending and contributing to all team and editorial meetings;
- Having authority over all matters pertaining to graphics, but final authority over all editorial matters rests with the Editor-in-Chief;
- Meeting all deadlines set by the Editor-in-Chief;
- Other reasonable duties as requested by the Board of Directors or the Editor-in-Chief.
Characteristics of a strong applicant include:
- Experience creating illustrations, graphics and other visual content;
- Knowledge of Canva, Photoshop and other design tools;
- Knowledge of graphic design principles and best practices;
- Knowledge of the Carleton University community;
Other Important Information:
The position requires part-time work beginning in September 2026 and concluding in April 2027.
Job Type:
Part-time, approx. 10 hours every two weeks
Salary:
Honorarium: $500 per semester (subject to change).
Schedule:
Monday to Friday, flexible working hours
Favourable candidates will have these experiences:
- At least one (1) year of creating illustrations, graphics and/or other visual content (required)
- At least one (1) year of involvement in the Carleton community (required)

According to the Charlatan’s bylaws, no editorial team may be involved with the executive of a political party or involved with organizing events for political parties on campus. Nor shall any editorial team member be a CUSA, GSA, CASG or RRRA councilor or executive member, either during their term or in the year previous to their term. Nor may any member of the editorial team be a member of Carleton University’s Board of Governors or Senate during their time on the editorial team. They must be transparent about their involvement with any organization which would pose a significant conflict of interest.
