Campus safety evacuated three buildings Jul 5. in response to a gas leak resulting from construction, according to a university email.

A construction crew working on road resurfacing on Campus Ave. accidentally severed a natural gas pipe in front of Renfrew House, according to director of university safety Allan Burns.

The Department of University Safety evacuated Prescott House, Renfrew House, Lennox and Addington House, Campus Ave., and the surrounding walking area in the morning.

The university posted announcements in Carleton Central to inform students of the gas leak and evacuation. When entry was safe, the university used Carleton Central and the Emergency Notification System.

The area around the buildings were cordoned off and closed to all cars and pedestrian traffic, said media relations co-ordinator Chris Cline via email.

Cline said the evacuation measures were “precautionary.”

Once Enbridge Gas was able to repair the leak air quality samples were taken in the three buildings and they were cleared for reoccupation, Burns said.

Cline said everyone was evacuated safely.
