A man died in hospital Sunday evening after going into cardiac arrest at the Carleton University swimming pool.

Ottawa Paramedic Service spokesperson Marc-Antoine Deschamps said emergency crews were called around 8 p.m. after an adult male was found in cardiac arrest in the pool.

Lifeguards pulled the man from the pool and immediately initiated CPR with assistance from special constables.

Deschamps said paramedics continued providing care and transported the patient to the hospital in critical condition.

The man was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The university said staff followed the established safety and emergency response protocols. Carleton Athletics confirmed the pool will be closed June 9 but will re-open June 10.
