With only two games left to go in the 2013-14 regular season, the Ravens men’s basketball team remains undefeated after two consecutive wins Feb. 7-8.
The Ravens beat the York University Lions on the road in the first game, staying only a few points above York until the final quarter, eventually managing to outscore their opponents 98-59.
The following day, the Ravens won against the Queen’s University Gaels 91-59.
With only two games left in the season, the Ravens’ 20-game winning streak means a perfect season is well within reach.
Fourth-year guard Philip Scrubb said while both games were successful, they don’t guarantee an easy end to the season.
“York had some injuries and a couple of their best players were out, so they didn’t have their best team,” he said.
The Ravens led 29-10 after the first quarter.
“We started off pretty well,” Scrubb said. “I think we came off with a lot of energy, especially on the defence line . . . but we kind of took our foot off the gas in the second quarter.”
Scrubb said the next game against the Gaels was somewhat the opposite, with a slow start and a strong end to the game.
“The first half wasn’t great in terms of the starters getting the job done,” he said. “The bench started coming in and playing well . . . in the second half, we went on a bit of a run.”
Carleton finished the second quarter with a 39-24 lead, gaining the other 52 points in the second half.
The Ravens will be playing their last two games of the season at home against the Algoma University Thunderbirds and the Laurentian University Voyageurs Feb. 14-15. If they win both games, Scrubb said they can boast a challenging but rewarding perfect season.
Fourth-year guard Thomas Scrubb said the team shouldn’t assume the last two games will be smooth sailing.
“We always try to go in confident, but it’s not going to be easy,” he said.
Philip said Laurentian poses a particular threat, having recently beaten the Ryerson University Rams, a big rival for the Ravens.
“You have to go in and be confident in your abilities, but we’re not assuming it’s going to be easy at all. And that’s what our coaches stress a lot, that you can’t be complacent,” he said.
Philip said the team is pretty excited for their last two games, but they will have to stay on their toes.
“We’ve got to go in and obviously be confident in our ability, but not over-confident that we’re just going to roll over the team.”
