Carleton University students hit the pavement on Wednesday afternoon to protest upcoming changes to OSAP.
At noon, some students and faculty members staged a walkout and marched down the frosty sidewalks from the Tory Building to the intersection of Bronson Avenue and University Drive.
With placards held high, protesters chanted, “Degrees, not debt!”
Traffic flowing from Bronson Avenue into the university came to a brief halt, as demonstrators approached drivers, asking if they knew about OSAP cuts and handed informational flyers through car windows.
This protest follows the Ontario government’s stated plan to decrease the allocation of grants offered through OSAP from 85 per cent of funding to a maximum of 25 per cent — with the rest amounting to student loans.
The decision has sparked a student-led wave of demonstrations at the secondary level, too.
The walkout, which was organized by students and teaching assistants, commanded a crowd of dozens of students and faculty members.
