The Carleton University Students’ Association has announced the winners of its byelection to fill some of its empty seats on council. 

Carleton students cast 1,928 valid ranked-choice ballots, CUSA announced Monday, resulting in an overall voter turnout of 8.9 per cent in the byelection. 

Turnout in this round of voting by dropped more than half from the 21.3 per cent voter turnout in this February’s general election

In a similar council byelection in 2023, voter turnout was 19.8 per cent.

Councillor responsibilities include passing CUSA’s budget and voting on issues brought forward to the student union. 

Here are the byelection winners: 

Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences:

  • Ana Jankowski, a humanities and Greek and Roman studies student.  

Voter turnout for the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences was 7.7 per cent. 

Faculty of Public and Global Affairs:

  • Olivia Hainsworth, a political science student. 
  • Aditri Janapatla, a journalism and political science student.

Voter turnout for the Faculty of Public and Global Affairs was 9.8 per cent.

Faculty of Engineering and Design: 

  • Amani Kaur Bhullar, an engineering student. 

Voter turnout for the Faculty of Engineering and Design was nine per cent. 

Faculty of Science:

  • Rosalie Meunier, a computer science student. 

Voter turnout for the Faculty of Science was 8.8 per cent.

Vacant seats

The following seats will remain empty, as not enough nominations were received:

  • One seat for the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
  • Two seats for the Faculty of Engineering and Design
  • Two seats for the Sprott School of Business
  • One seat for Special Students

These empty seats will stay vacant for the rest of the current council term until the next general election in the winter semester, CUSA chief returning officer Connor Plante told the Charlatan.
