WWE’s Hardcore Legend Mick Foley is performing at Yuk Yuk’s on Oct. 23-24. Foley will be performing in his one-man show Hardcore Legend: An Evening With Mick Foley, a performance that mixes humour as well as anecdotes from his time as a professional wrestler.
Foley has made a name for himself as one of the cornerstones of the WWE’s rise in the late ‘90s. Originally wrestling under the name “Cactus Jack,” he earned the nickname “Hardcore Legend” for his ability to endure excessively brutal injuries.
After 11 years as Cactus Jack, Foley abandoned this persona in favour of the character of “Mankind.”
Mankind, Foley claimed, was inspired by a combination of reading Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and listening to the music of Tori Amos. As Mankind, Foley won the WWE Championship three times and gained fame for participating in gruesome matches.
When his retirement from wrestling loomed, Foley turned to the literary world. He has written four memoirs, four children’s books, and two books of fiction. He also broke into the acting world, appearing in both 30 Rock and Avatar: The Last Airbender.
He ventured into the world of comedy in 2009 when he headlined a sold-out show at Hollywood Improv.
Since then he has performed at both Just for Laughs in Montreal and Fringe Fest in Edinburgh, the two largest comedy festivals in the world.
Foley’s past performances of Hardcore Legend have been well-received.
Wrestling fans are guaranteed to love it, while those who are not will still like the performance, according to Broadway Babies. Chortle said, “Onstage, Foley is charm personified: eloquent, self-effacing, and funny.” The Layfield Report, similarly entranced, said, “He always leaves them laughing. Laughing, standing at the end and always wanting more.”
