The Ottawa Police Service were on hand Sept. 30 with the department of university safety to record the speed of cars on University Drive as part of Carleton’s Safety Week initiative.

A traffic stop was set up at the pedestrian crossing outside the athletics facility where drivers were given pamphlets about safe driving habits and were reminded that the speed limit on campus is 30 kilometres per hour.

University safety community liaison Mark Hargreaves said although there have not been many reported incidents of dangerous driving on campus there have been a few complaints about speeding, especially at pedestrian crossings.

While not a major safety issue, Hargreaves said dangerous driving can have dangerous consequences and it is important to ensure that pedestrian crossings are safe.

He said the rest of the week will focus on reducing the instances of theft on campus and increase the connection between campus safety and the community.

“Overall safety and security on campus still remains very high,” he said. “Campus is still a really safe place to be.”
