The summer 2021 semester will be held mostly online, the university announced Tuesday morning.
Following the Carleton University Scenario Planning recommendation for Summer 2021, the university Senate voted at its Jan. 29 meeting to operate in largely the same way as the fall and winter semesters.
“As always, our top priorities are to ensure the health and safety of our community, and to provide students with an excellent education and student experience no matter the circumstances,” university president Benoit-Antoine Bacon wrote in an email to all students.
Bacon said the university needs “a clearer idea of the progress of vaccination programs” before making a decision on the fall 2021 semester. He did not give a timeline for when a decision will be made.
At the January student government lunch, Bacon said the longer the university waits to make a decision on whether the fall 2021 semester will be online, “the better it will be,” according to Rideau River Residence Association president Jaden Slawter.
For the summer semester, the Senate left the door open to holding some activities in person on campus, “should circumstances permit.”
“On-campus activities would be voluntary for both instructors and students,” a summary of the Senate meeting states.
