A first-year student at the University of Waterloo was killed by lightning on campus near residences Sept. 5.

The student, an 18-year-old female in nanotechnology engineering, was walking from campus to residence shortly after 9 a.m. when she was struck by lightning, according to Nick Manning, Waterloo media relations personnel.

A press release by the university said the student died from her injuries in the hospital.

Manning said the university is waiting for the full accident report to be completed before further details can be released.

“University of Waterloo police, our safety office, the Waterloo regional police, and the ministry of labour are the main authorities handling the investigation,” he said.

Manning added the university is currently working with the family of the victim to offer them support services.

“We lowered all flags on campus to half mast and cancelled all orientation activities on Friday as a mark of respect,” he said.
