In addition to welcoming various MPs to Ottawa Sept. 17-18 during an orientation weekend for newly elected members of Parliament, Carleton president Roseann Runte emphasized the importance of federal funding for universities.

Runte pleaded the case of universities across Canada for an increase in federal government support.

“Universities are about a lot more than simply educating young people,” said Runte, while addressing the room full of MPs.  “They’re about the future of this country.”

Runte continued by emphasizing the importance of research in universities to ensure a stronger Canada.

Runte praised the federal government for having “done a wonderful job” thus far with regards to funding research in universities. She also reinforced the importance of that “little bit of investment” in Canada’s universities in order to assure it remains strong.

Giving what she called her “presidential push” to Canada’s leaders, Runte made it clear the “hard times [and] hard choices” of investment in Canadian universities will pay off in the future.
