The Carleton Ravens men’s hockey team have recently announced their 2015-16 captain, Joey West.

West has been a big part of Carleton’s offensive line since joining in 2012. He has contributed over 50 points during his career as a Raven.

Teammate Jason Seed said he believes West was an appropriate choice for this year’s captain.

“Joey was a leader on the team before this year, even though he didn’t have a letter,” he said. “[Joey] leads by example and never takes a day off.”

Being a hard-working and dedicated player who always attends practice is what makes him a good fit for this big leadership role, Seed said.

“He makes a good leader and is someone that all of the guys look up to,” Seed said.

West, the fifth Carleton Raven to be given the title, said the team has always been blessed with good captains during his time as a Raven.

“They’ve all had their own style and lead in their own way,” West said.

Key qualities they possessed which stood out to West were they had a team-first mentality, and, much like himself, were very passionate about the game, he said.

When asked how he plans to lead the team, West replied, “I’m just going to be myself and keep doing the things that have put me in this role.”

The team has come very close to reaching nationals over the last couple of years. Several Ravens said getting to compete at this level is one of their main goals for this season.
