Name: Matthew Couto

Program/Year: Journalism, second year

Position running for: Journalism councillor

1. Why are you running for CUSA council?

I am running because I am frustrated with how CUSA has operated in the past and I am translating that sentiment into action.

2. What do you think makes you a good candidate?

I am an honest, strong and patient individual with a lot of integrity. I have the ability and intent to rise above personal politics and adopt a student-centered, compromise-oriented approach. I will stand up for my own values and the interests of journalism students.

3. What are two things you hope to achieve if elected?

I hope to engage journalism students through social media during and in between meetings, including establishing a live video feed. In addition, I aim to put forward various motions to increase transparency through more open rules regarding the dissemination of CUSA dealings.

4. What’s one fun fact about yourself?

I was attracted to journalism due to my various interests. I play the drums, played competitive basketball and enjoy creative writing — not to mention my passion for politics and political issues.
