The Charlatan is Carleton University’s independent newspaper. Run by students for students, the paper has been providing the Carleton community with news and entertainment for more than 75 years.

Job Description: Summer Arts Editor
The Charlatan Summer Arts Editor is a part-time position in charge of running the arts section of our paper. The Arts Editor will report to the Editor-in-Chief and work closely with the rest of the editorial staff. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Pitching, editing and publishing 1-2 articles per week;
  • Co-ordinating graphic and photo requests to accompany each article, including setting deadlines for these requests;
  • Recruiting, maintaining contact with, supervising and training arts volunteers;
  • Assigning reporters for all arts and culture stories;
  • Maintaining for each production week a section summary detailing all articles, their assigned reporters and deadlines;
  • Attending and contributing to all staff and editorial meetings, unless excused by the Editor-in-Chief;
  • Having authority over all matters pertaining to the arts section, but final authority over all editorial matters rests with the Editor-in-Chief;
  • Meeting all deadlines set by the Editor-in-Chief;
  • Other reasonable duties as requested by the Board of Directors or the Editor-in-Chief.

Characteristics of a strong applicant include:

  • Previous work or volunteer experience with the paper is an asset;
  • Experience reporting arts and culture stories;
  • Experience coordinating volunteers and managing people;
  • Experience editing for style, structure, tone and readability;
  • Knowledge of WordPress, Slack, Mail Chimp and/or Asana;
  • Knowledge of CP Style;
  • Knowledge of the arts and culture scene within Carleton University and Ottawa;
  • Leadership skills;
  • Organized;
  • Resourceful;
  • Collaborative;
  • Positive attitude.

Other Important Information:
The position requires part-time work beginning in June.

Job Type:

  • Part-time, approx. 10 hours every two weeks

Salary:

  • $170, paid every two weeks

Schedule:

  • Monday to Friday, flexible working hours

Location:

  • Remote or Ottawa, Ont.
