The Charlatan is Carleton University’s independent newspaper. Run by students for students, the paper has been providing the Carleton community with news and entertainment for more than 80 years.

Job Description: Social Media Manager

The Charlatan Social Media Manager is a creative part-time position with influence over many aspects of our paper. The Social Media Manager will report to the Editor-in-Chief and have a close relationship with the editorial team. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Posting media content to Instagram, X, YouTube, LinkedIn, and TikTok;
  • Creating at least one weekly TikTok/Instagram reel style video related to the Charlatan’s coverage;
  • Monitoring the Charlatan’s online presence through social media analytics;
  • Moderating social media comment sections and direct messages as necessary;
  • Working to increase user engagement across social media platforms;
  • Ensuring all social media work coheres with the Charlatan’s branding, social media policy and ethics;
  • Attend weekly editorial team meetings;
  • Undertaking occasional special projects to improve the visual appeal and efficiency of the Charlatan social media;
  • Other duties as required.

Characteristics of a strong applicant include:

  • Experience using social media platforms (Instagram, TikTok,YouTube, X, LinkedIn);
  • Experience using Canva and/or Photoshop to create engaging visuals;
  • Knowledge of social media analytics;
  • Knowledge of the Carleton University community;
  • A confident on-camera presence with a strong broadcast delivery;
  • Video journalism experience is a strong asset.

Other Important Information

The position requires part-time work beginning in September 2026 and concluding in April 2027.

Job Type:

Part-time, approx. 10 hours every two weeks

Salary:

Honorarium: $500 per semester (subject to change).

Flexible working hours

Experience:

  • At least one (1) year creating social media content (preferred)
  • At least one (1) year of involvement in the Carleton community (required)

Conflict of interest disclaimer:

According to the Charlatan’s bylaws, no editorial team member may be involved with the executive of a political party or involved with organizing events for political parties on campus. Nor shall any editorial team member be a CUSA, GSA, CASG or RRRA councillor or executive member, either during their term or in the year previous to their term. Nor may any member of the editorial team member may be a member of Carleton University’s Board of Governors or Senate during their time on the editorial team. They must be transparent about their involvement with any organization which would pose a significant conflict of interest.
