As 2016 begins, weight loss, healthy eating, and a better lifestyle are a priority for many.

But only about eight per cent of people keep their New Year’s resolution, suggests research from the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania. It’s because the resolutions we make are too big and we skip the small steps that are necessary to lead to the change we want.

So what are some smaller resolutions that will lead to accomplishing the bigger one? Here are a few suggestions.

Make plans

As students, we live irregular lifestyles. Many of us have classes at odd hours, and when we aren’t at school we’re balancing a social life with an ever-changing work schedule.

If you want to accomplish your goals, buy an agenda and use it. A schedule will remind you what you need to do while helping you prioritize tasks.

If you want to go to the gym, pick out days of the week and go at a regular time.

Try to regulate your sleep schedule by setting a daily morning alarm.

Figure out your lifestyle and then make a meal plan that will work with it. If you aren’t home often, buy food that you can easily take to go.

Routine is healthy for everyone, yet extremely hard for students to accomplish with such irregular schedules.

Consume with caution

Be careful about what you buy. Food, cosmetics, and cleaners all come loaded with chemicals that aren’t properly tested for safety.

If you’re looking to live a healthier lifestyle, it’s important to think about what you put in your body.

Once you’re aware of what you’re consuming, and making health conscious decisions regularly, it will be easier to live a healthy lifestyle. What you buy determines what type of lifestyle you will live.

Stay hydrated

We all know how important water is to our bodies. It does everything from refuelling us to clarifying our skin. Staying hydrated will make you a healthier person. The more water we drink, the more energy we have and the more we can do.

If you are dehydrated, chances are you won’t be feeling your best, and you won’t accomplish any of the plans you had.

Try to drink a glass of water as soon as you wake up in the morning and 30 minutes before any large meal. The water will keep your system running efficiently and leave your body feeling it’s best.

If you find water tasteless, add fruit to give it a kick of flavour or carry around a water bottle to remind yourself to drink.

Get positive

Don’t dwell on the negative. When bad things happen, try to let them go.

It’s easier said than done, but a positive attitude is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle. If you dwell on negative thoughts, you are only attracting more negative energy to yourself.

If it’s hard to stay positive, try writing down what makes you happy every day. Remind yourself of all of the good things daily, and forget the bad.

When you believe in yourself, you can literally do anything you want. If you believe that you can accomplish your New Year’s resolution, you will do it.
