Hajar Furat is a first-year student running to become one of our next faculty of arts and social sciences councillor.

She is double majoring in psychology and law, as well as minoring in neuroscience. Since her birth in Iraq, Baghdad, Hajar lived in the United Arab Emirates before moving to Canada at age 10. Being raised in two different cultures has taught her many valuable lessons about the appreciation of the opportunities around her, the need for diversity to spice up her life, and the importance of giving back to the community, because everyone needs a helping hand at some point in their lives.

Hajar is a major human rights advocate. Since grade 10, Hajar has completed over 1,600 volunteer hours, serving both her school and community. She believes that volunteering is a very valuable experience that allows people to grow spiritually, making volunteering a major key to success, as DJ Khaled would say.

She was a students’ council representative, student ambassador, and a Link Crew leader at her high school, a teaching assistant at Arabic school, and a counsellor at her school’s leadership camp, as well as Christie Lake Kids camp, which supports under-privileged kids in the Ottawa area. She was a master of ceremony for the In Love and In Danger conference raising awareness on dating violence. Hajar graduated high school as an honour roll student and valedictorian with awards such as the David McGuinty award and lieutenant governor award as well as the OCDSB leadership award from Brookfield High School.

Hajar’s hobbies include weight lifting, travelling, volunteering and meeting new people. In her free time, she likes to bond with her Alpha Omicron Pi sisters and friends, go on nice walks to Loblaws to purchase their freshly squeezed orange juice, Whatsapp her parents from halfway across the world, or Netflix and chill by herself.

Hajar would like to become your next faculty of arts and social sciences councillor because she believes Carleton students pay more than enough to provide students with disabilities improved services in areas of facilities and academic support, obtain at least 50 pages of free printing paper per semester, and extend the food court hours till 9:00 p.m., giving on-the-go students an extra hour to grab food.
