A wild elk causing O-Train and bus delays and cancellations was shot and killed Oct. 8, according to Const. Chuck Benoit of the Ottawa Police Service.
According to the OC Transpo website, bus routes 16, 86, 87, 94, 95, 96, 97, and 98 were diverted and the O-Train between Carleton and Bayview was shut down but all the routes are back on schedule.
“It was put down for the public safety,” Benoit said. “All avenues were exhausted trying to tranquilize it, and so for the safety of the animal and the safety of the public, a decision was made in conjunction with the City of Ottawa, the [Nature Conservancy of Canada] and the Ottawa police.”
Ottawa police received a call at 7:36 a.m. to help remove an elk that stepped onto the O-Train tracks near Bayview and Lebreton Station, Benoit said.
Benoit said Nature Conservancy of Canada officials and police officers had diverted and shut down traffic near the intersections at Albert, Scott, Preston, and Bayview.
O-Train service has since resumed.
