On Nov. 15, the Carleton Ravens and the University of Ottawa faced off in the fourth annual hockey rivalry game, the Colonel By Classic. Crowds descended on TD Place, taking a Friday night off to enjoy school sport and start off the weekend.

The men’s team did, that is. The women’s team played a game on Sunday night in the stuffy Carleton Ice House.

This disparity reflects a cataclysmic failure on the part of the university, and represents a blatant lack of interest in and support for women’s sports.

A Sunday night game at the Ice House is not an event match-up with the same allure and draw as the Colonel By Classic. How can the university claim equal treatment when they showcase the men’s team in the bright lights of TD Place, and hide the women’s team away in the Ice House?

While the university is not responsible for every single student’s interest in women’s sports, a little effort would be nice. Having both games back-to-back in the same quality of arena at least would show that.
