With the euphoria of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s election victory replaced by the spectre of a sagging economy and the logistical headache of resettling 25,000 refugees, 2016 will probably determine whether the new government is serious about enacting change.
His majority government had nothing short of a far-reaching and progressive platform that included spending $1.5 billion over five years to create 40,000 jobs annually for youth.
But in the face of more pressing issues, student issues will likely be pushed to the back of his agenda.
However, the silver lining will be that the Liberal government’s action, if any, will probably help students by pursuing their other campaign goals.
Economic stimulus spending can result in jobs for young people. The government is already hiring 35,000 summer workers to work on a restored census. Reforming Bill C-51 and legalizing marijuana are also bills supported by many students.
Students shouldn’t get impatient yet. Trudeau has a majority government with a four-year term.
In the meantime, students must apply pressure on the government to ensure Trudeau keeps his promises.
