U of O professor claims he was spied on
Denis Rancourt, the tenured University of Ottawa physics professor who made headlines in March 2009 when he was dismissed by the university, has announced on his blog that the university hired an undergraduate student journalist to spy on him.
U of O dismissed Rancourt on March 31 because they said he was grading his students arbitrarily. Rancourt was well-known for his pedagogic teaching method whereby he awarded an A+ to all of his students.
U of M fight club gets busted
The first rule of fight club is you don’t talk about fight club, but that didn’t stop University of Manitoba staff from discovering one such club operating in the U of M’s Frank Kennedy Recreation Centre.
Earlier this month, five people, including one staff member, were suspended from the facility for a month, said Leah Janzen, U of M’s communications manager.
Google could save U of A $2 million a year
The University of Alberta is in the process of deciding whether to outsource its e-mail to Google in a move that has some critics concerned about privacy.
“Google wants to take all of our faculty and students and turn them into lifelong Googlers,” said project organizer Jonathan Schaeffer said. “They want to make people fall in love with Google’s tools.”
UBC engineers outfit Canadian Olympians for gold
Canada has yet to win an Olympic gold medal on home soil but some engineers at the University of British Columbia are doing their best to change that.
While athletes around the world have been bracing themselves for the 2010 Games in Vancouver, a team of UBC engineering students has been hard at work improving the equipment and accessories used by members of various Canadian Olympic teams.
Bye bye Beaver
History lovers across the country have had mixed reactions to the sudden rebranding of the esteemed magazine, The Beaver.
The publication will change its name to Canada’s Historythis April in part due to the sexual connotation of its previous title.
This Winnipeg-based publication, which has been around for 90 years, was originally a monthly periodical for the Hudson’s Bay Company. It now has more than 50,000 subscribers.
