More mature students at school

The number of mature students studying at universities and colleges across Canada is on the rise, according to David Sovka, associate director of marketing and recruitment at Camosun College in Victoria, B.C.

Sovka said he believes the trend is in direct correlation with the state of the economy, and the factors surrounding it.

It’s about “people losing jobs, industries changing — growing and dying and moving on — and other huge shifts in what people do for a living,” he said.

McGill admin addresses police conduct

McGill University principal Heather Munroe-Blum has spoken out about the use of police force at a Nov. 10 rally against tuition hikes in the province.

“We are all deeply dismayed by what transpired on our campus, particularly coming as it did at the end of a day of extraordinarily well-planned and mostly peaceful student protests,” Munroe-Blum said in a statement.

A student-led movement took place Nov. 10 at post-secondary schools across Quebec, opposing the tuition hike that will kick in next year.
