Carleton University’s student government elections season has come to a close and new executives are set to take office for the upcoming academic year.

Throughout the winter term, Carleton students elected new student government executives for Carleton University Students’ Association (CUSA), Rideau River Residence Association (RRRA), Carleton Academic Student Government (CASG), the Board of Governors (BoG) and the Graduate Students’ Association (GSA).

Here’s a roundup of the incoming student government executives for the 2024/2025 academic year.

CUSA

Fourth-year neuroscience student Sarah El Fitori was elected as CUSA president on Feb. 12 with 52 per cent of votes in the final round. 

CUSA council also elected three vice-presidents during its annual members meeting on March 10.

Aiden Rohacek, a public affairs and policy management student entering his third year, was elected as the new vice-president (internal) with 31 out of 31 votes. As the only candidate for this position, Rohacek won a vote of confidence.

Artur Estrela da Silva, a political science and international relations student going into his fourth year, was elected as the new vice-president (student issues) with 29 out of 31 votes.

Nawaila Imtiaz, a political science student entering her third year, was elected as the new vice-president (student life) with 17 votes in the fourth round of balloting.

Samuel Easby was elected the new vice-president (finance/treasurer) by CUSA council during CUSA’s annual members’ meeting on April 8.

RRRA

On April 23, RRRA announced the winning candidates from its annual executive election.

Mohammed Akif, a computer science student entering his third year, was elected as president with 425 out of 834 votes in the final round.

Quinn Cunnane, a fourth-year commerce student, was elected as vice-president (programming) with 438 out of 726 votes in the final round.

Jacky Chan, a public affairs and policy management student entering his second year, was elected as vice-president (administration) with 458 out of 831 votes in the final round.

CASG

CASG announced its executive election results on April 5. 

Allan Buri, a public affairs and policy management student going into third year, was elected president with 39 out of 41 votes. Buri, who held the role of CASG vice-president (internal) in 2023/2024, was the only candidate running for this position.

Alison Kocsis, an English student going into her third year, was elected as vice-president (academic) with 35 votes.

Aidan Patrick, a computer science student entering his third year, was elected as vice-president (internal) with 38 votes. 

Rhea Treasure, a public affairs and policy management student going into third year, was elected as vice-president (operations) with 31 votes. 

Arleth Lugo Ruiz was elected as faculty of arts and social sciences coordinator with 10 out of 14 votes. Lugo Ruiz was the only candidate running for this position. 

BoG

Four students were elected to the Board of Governors.

The undergraduate representatives will be third-year economics student Yafet Bizuneh, and Logan Breen, a fourth-year political science and economics student. 

Also elected to the board are Georgette Morris, a PhD student in law and legal studies, and Janakan Muthukumar, a PhD student in the department of law and faculty of public affairs.

GSA

The GSA issued its executive election results on March 22.

Jayesh Kundu was elected as president, winning a vote of confidence with 576 votes. 

Jean Peng was elected as vice-president (operations) with 295 votes. 

Reza Sohrabi was elected vice-president (finance) with 343 votes. 

Shakib Mahamud was elected vice-president (external) with 288 votes. 

Masha Abarghouei was elected as vice-president (academic) with 258 votes. 

Zahra Esfandiari was elected as the GSA’s representative on the Carleton University the senate with 588 votes. Esfandiari was the only candidate running for this position.
