Carleton will provide students with an option to use their preferred name on campus cards and class lists by the end of August.

Suzanne Blanchard, vice-president (students and enrolment), said the university worked with Equity Services to launch this new option for students.

“It is an accomplishment for all the students and for the transgender students. It’s something that will help them be able to feel more comfortable on campus,” she said.

Blanchard said students will be able to change their name through Carleton Central. The system is still being tested but should be ready by the end of August.

Zack Kiiffner, a first-year criminology student, said via Facebook he will make use of the option because he prefers his nickname.

“I think it’s extremely helpful for students because I know what it’s like to have an odd name, and it’s not always fun,” he said.
