Carleton’s president is signing several new deals with companies and universities in China as part of a week-long visit to form new partnerships.
President Roseann Runte travelled to China as part of a larger Ottawa delegation led by Mayor Jim Watson, according to Randy Zadra, director of Carleton International. Carleton International is a university department that supports Carleton’s international partnerships.
The university is establishing a Clean Energy Research Institute in the engineering department in collaboration with the ENN Group, a Chinese company building liquefied natural gas (LNG) stations in Canada, according to a Carleton press release.
LNG is a clear, colourless, non-toxic fuel that has less carbon emission than traditional sources, according to the release.
“It’s actually a pretty major achievement for Carleton because we also have an undergraduate program in a clean, sustainable energy,” Zadra said.
The new institute will be within the department of mechanical and aerospace engineering and will be run by Junjie Gu, who began work in 2008 with ENN as a visiting scholar from Carleton, according to the release.
The institute will look at various aspects of LNG research, such as transporting it and making engines that run on the fuel, according to the release.
Runte is also signing a deal with Central China Normal University for student exchanges and with a university in Beijing for students in the bachelor of international business to study abroad at, according to Zadra.
