Imagine what every single individual at Carleton could create in terms of designing clothing. As individuals we all follow particular passions and inspirations, many of which come through in our work and lifestyle. The colourful and unique students that attend our university could create combinations and different styles that have never been thought of or explored before in the designing world. This week’s Campus Style caught students working the blazers and bravely mixing prints and tones, with a hint of what they would create as the next Karl Lagerfeld.

Tell us about your outfit!

My boots are from Forever 21, my skirt is from American Apparel, my sunglasses are from Ardene, and my bag is from my dad’s closet! My shoes were purchased at Tanda Shoes, where I work.

Do you believe fur and leather belong in the fashion industry?

Well, I’m in the shoe business, so leather definitely has its place in my opinion. For fur, maybe more [so] in northern Canada, but I’m just not big on fur.

If you were a designer creating your very own line for winter, what would you include in it?

Big scarves and knitwear! Definitely playing with textures, having knitwear mixed with tights and different combinations of big sweaters.

What are you working with today?

I got my boots from Spring — they were the best deal ever. My tights are from Joe Fresh or something like that; my dress is from Simons in Quebec City, and the blazer from Eclipse in my hometown. My dress and jean jacket are both from American Eagle.

Do you think real leather has a place in the fashion industry?

That’s a hard question to answer, because I’m not the type of person who’s super into animal rights, but I definitely think fake leather looks pretty much the same and it’s without harming animals, so why does it have to be real leather?

If you were a designer creating a line of accessories for this winter, what would it entail?

Wool scarves, and hats, that are both functional and stylish. I find that sometimes if you want to be warm you have to wear the ugliest things ever. I love bright colours, patterns, mixing them all together, that kind of stuff!

Tell us what you chose to display today!

I got the boots from Roots, I love their shoes. My jeans were five dollars . . . somewhere in a mall? My top was thrifted from the Salvation Army in Calgary, the blazer from Aritzia, and the scarf was my mom’s!

Do you think fur has a place in the fashion industry?

No, not at all. I don’t think I can say anything eloquent or coherent right now, but I think that meat from a responsible source is understandable, but using animals purely for decoration I’m not supportive of. However, traditional clothing I see as an exception.

If you were designing a line for this winter, what kind of clothing would you include?

I haven’t been following fashion or reading magazines or anything, but I’ll always love knits for winter which are so comfortable and perfect. I love nice fabrics, like silk, and any sort of texture as well.
