Carleton’s Board of Governors (BoG) passed a motion earlier this spring to change its building-naming policy that determines how buildings and other spaces on campus are named after donors to the school.

Carleton President Roseann Runte said that under the new rules, donors who give amounts of $100,000 or less can now have spaces named after them without approval from the BoG. She said this change will help ensure the process of naming campus spaces after donors will be faster and more efficient.

According to Runte, individuals who donate under $100,000 are only eligible to name a small space, such as an office or a room, as opposed to an entire building. These smaller financial gifts, Runte said, are still approved by her, the dean, the provost and the Senior Management Committee –removing the need for the BoG’s approval is the only difference.

Members of the public, alumni, university staff, corporations and foundations are all regular financial donors to Carleton. Endowments are used to support students, research, special projects and improve campus amenities.
