Students received a notification via phone and email from Campus Safety about an “active attacker” being sighted on campus at around 2 p.m. today. The notification turned out to be a false alarm.
An email from the school informing students about the error has since been sent out.
Students in some classes were asked by their instructors to vacate their lecture rooms.
According to a new email by the university, the email was sent out because of an error that occurred when the Emergency Notification System (ENS) was being updated.
“The wrong computer key was hit and a template for one of several types of potential emergencies went out to the community,” the email said.

In a phone call, @CarletonSafety said THIS IS A FALSE ALARM. Students have been asked to wait for further emails and updates on their email and texts. Some sources are telling the emails/texts WERE NOT sent by Carleton, could be possible infiltration #ottnews @CharlatanLive

The university just issued emails and texts apologizing for the false error: “We can reassure you that everything is safe and under control.” Still waiting to confirm if this was possible infiltration #ottnews #ottcity @CharlatanLive pic.twitter.com/oRFhW3BwIe

Statements from the Carleton CSS tech teams have said the false alarm was a result of “testing the emergency messaging system.” No infiltration, but student are enraged at the fact that the warning seemed “so realistic.” #ottnews #ottcity @CharlatanLive
