A Carleton student has survived the Nunavut plane crash near Resolute Bay that claimed the lives of 12 passengers.

The 737 passenger jet crashed Aug. 20 close to the Resolute Bay airport while travelling from Yellowknife, N.W.T. with 15 people on board, including four crew members, according to Nunavut RCMP.

The cause of the crash is still unknown, according to The Transportation Safety Board of Canada.

Nicole Williamson, a Carleton geosciences master’s student, is one of three survivors of the crash. Williamson was expected to undergo foot surgery last week, according to the CBC. Williamson is still recovering from the tragedy, but her father said she was released from the hospital Aug. 28, according to a tweet from Ottawa Citizen reporter Claire Brownell. The two other survivors are Gabrielle Pelky, 7, and Robin Wyllie, 48. Both are recovering in Ottawa hospitals, according to the CBC.

Williamson was identified as a huge aid in Pelky’s rescue, the CBC reported.

Williamson’s family released a statement confirming her survival and indicating her gratitude to all of the emergency responders essential to the rescue.
