Hungry Carleton University students: you’re in luck.

As of last week, Richcraft Hall is home to a new “upscale” sit-down restaurant offering up views of the Rideau River.

Riverbank Social serves breakfast and lunch with a focus on local ingredients, including a continental and hot breakfast menu with a dish of pastries and fruit for $9.99 or a deluxe hot breakfast for $12.75.

For lunch, customers can order $10 salads, a $15 burger, or house-made ice cream for $6, among other options.

The new restaurant is welcome news for some Ravens, including Xavier de Salaberry, a master’s student in the Norman Patterson School of International Affairs.

“Hopefully, [Riverbank Social will be] offering a little more casual fine-dining-ish,” de Salaberry said.

“Something a little more appropriate and applicable to more high-level or professional meetings, but also hopefully still offering a reasonable price point for the student body.”

Avery Berman, an assistant physics professor at Carleton, was among the first cohort of diners to test out the restaurant late last week.

“It’s a really nice location right down the river,” Berman said. “You got to see people walking up and down, so I think that’s really great.”

Still, he said Riverbank Social has “a few kinks to work out,” adding the meal he received didn’t quite meet his expectations.

“They missed kind of the main toppings of the sandwich and forgot the side,” Berman said. However, he said the staff was apologetic and he believes he just caught them at an off time.

Berman said he would give the restaurant a second chance and visit again.
