Ravens golf team hires new program head

 The Carleton Ravens golf team has announced the hiringof newprogram head David McBain, who will be taking over from former head coach Andrew Donaldson. McBain was a varsity golfer himself with the Ravens team back in the 1970s. He was also one of the first two players ever to be awarded an athletic scholarship for golf in Canada. He spent the last five years as the golf team’s mental coach. “I feel the transition [from mental coach to head coach] is natural,” McBain said. Ravens golf ready for upcoming season

One of Carleton’s first sports teams is set to begin the 2015 season. The golf team’s first tournament of the season begins on Sept. 12, and assistant coach Dave McBain said the team is ready for a challenge for the upcoming campaign. McBain, who doubles as the head instructor at Performance 54 Golf, said the team is in a building phase and is excited for the upcoming campaign after a successful trip to the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) championship in Oshawa last year. In the men’s division, Carleton placed 13th out of 17 teams at the 2014 championships, while the women’s side finished ninth out of 10. Four Ravens golfers set history at nationals

Although the 2014 Canadian University/College Championships did not go how the Carleton Ravens golf team wanted, Samantha Coates, one of the Ravens golfers competing, said it was a historic achievement for the program. Four Carleton golfers travelled to Winnipeg and competed at nationals from June 3-6 at the Southwood Golf & Country Club—a number that Coates said is significant because it marked the most Ravens to ever attend the event. “We’ll always be able to say that we made athletic history [at Carleton],” she said.
