Y you be stereotypin’

Maybe Australians expect their parents to pay for their lifestyle, but over here in Canada we work hard for our wage. A recent study conducted in Australia claims two-thirds of generation Yers expect their parents to take financial responsibility for their education, rent and wedding.

This survey simply perpetuates stereotypes when many people in this age bracket are level-headed and hard working.

The unfair depiction justifies television shows starring bleach-blonde, Jaguar-driving teens in My Super Sweet 16, who laze around and expect their parents to shower them with money.

It’s stereotypes like these that give the rest of us a bad rep, and this survey does nothing to help the situation.

Many students today work up to three jobs to pay for their rent and voluntarily take control of their earnings to gain a sense of independence. Some parents feel obligated to pay for their children’s education and do so happily so long as
their children maintain their GPA. Even in these cases, students work diligently for their scholarships and credentials, proving that they are responsible for their accomplishments.

With the financial crisis, the survey especially does not give credit to students who have had to work extra hard to pay their bills. Galaxy Research, how is a survey of 1,000 Australians representative of the entire generation Y? Granted there are many bratty students who are spoiled by their parents, but there are many generation Yers who understand the value of a hard-earned dollar. Even if that means we won’t get on an MTV reality show.
