Mahshad Pazouki, an Iranian student, is working towards her PhD in chemical engineering at the University of Alberta. She said she chose to study in Canada because of its top ranking universities and post-graduation job opportunities.

Once rare, the number of Iranian students studying in Canada has been on the rise in recent years. However, officials at some Canadian universities have noticed a much larger jump in applications this year.

From Aug. 3 to Aug. 8, more than 50 Jamaican-Canadian youth joined delegates from the United Kingdom and the United States at the University of the West Indies in Jamaica to address issues affecting the nation.

The Future Leaders Conference allowed the Jamaican Diaspora and the Jamaican government to collaborate with youth in order to develop action plans for the nation’s future. Although the diaspora meets every two years to discuss initiatives to aid the country, this was the first year youth were engaged in the overall vision.
