In an energy-packed exhibition game, the under-20 junior Swedish national team thumped the Carleton Ravens 5-1 at the Ice House. 

However, the game was closer than the score indicated, as Carleton was constantly pressuring Jacob Markstrom, the Swedish net minder. 

Carleton’s own goalie, Alexander Archibald had an impressive day in net with a spectacular 40 saves out of 45 shots.

Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson, who is originally from Sweden, was on-hand for the ceremonial faceoff.

Sweden’s under-20 national junior team travelled more than 6,626 kilometres and spent nearly 10 hours in an airplane, coupled with a two-hour bus ride from Montreal to Ottawa, within a span of less than 48 hours to play Carleton men’s varsity hockey team Nov. 3.

Why would this team, comprised of 18 NHL draft picks, go through so much trouble to play against a Canadian university squad?

The answer is simple.

The Carleton women’s varsity basketball team crushed their cross-town rivals, the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees, 70-46 in their regular season home opener Nov. 3.

“The game was a little ragged,” said head coach Taffe Charles, “but we outworked them and it showed on the court.”

Carleton started the game a little slow, allowing the Gee-Gees to take an early lead because of sloppy passing and 11 Raven turnovers. 

However, the team quickly battled back to finish the quarter ahead 17-12.

The Carleton women’s varsity soccer team ended their season on a disappointing note, with a 3-1 loss to Queen’s University in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) East semifinals.

The young Raven squad, 6-8-2 on the season, entered the match looking to beat the second-ranked Golden Gaels who had only lost one match the entire season.

“We thought we could have won,” said head coach Alex McNutt. “I felt we were the better team [in the game].”

The Raven men’s varsity hockey team took a hard defeat on Oct. 30, losing 3-2 to the Ryerson University Rams in the Ice House.

The Ravens came out strong early in the first period, scoring four and a half minutes in.

Forward Andrew Self fired a hard shot on goal that rebounded to Jared Cipparone who shot the puck past the Rams’ scrambling goalie.

The Rams responded less than two minutes later when Stewart D’Eall snuck one by Ravens goalie Ryan Dube during a shuffle by the Raven defence.
