Ed Kane, assistant vice-president (university services) has been selected as an official Olympic torchbearer for the Vancouver 2010 Olympics.

On Dec. 11, Kane and several other torchbearers will carry the torch and run across parts of Ontario and Quebec, representing the Canadian spirit.

Kane said having the opportunity to run with the torch is a great honour, especially since he is an immigrant to Canada.

Flickering candlelight and the smell of burning wax filled the frosty air as a crowd approached the Montreal massacre memorial in Minto Park Dec. 6. Volunteers handed out flowers and information pamphlets as a light snow fell from the sky. Men and women of all ages stood in silence as they watched the passionate speaker at the front of the crowd.

Twenty years ago to the day, a lone gunman terrorized École Polytechnique in Montreal where he shot and killed 14 female engineering students and injured several more.

The House of Commons  passed a motion that would make it illegal for someone to encourage suicide via the Internet after a Carleton student committed suicide last April, Canwest News reported Nov. 18.

First-year student Nadia Kajouji was allegedly encouraged to hang herself in front of a web cam by a Minnesota man she met in a chat room.

Kajouji did not hang herself, but jumped into the Rideau River where she was found dead.

Students, faculty, staff and their families are invited to stop by the Ice House on Sat., Dec. 12 for Carleton’s holiday skate. Beginners can receive a lesson from 2:30-4 p.m. in Rink B, while seasoned veterans can enjoy open skate from 2-4 p.m. in Rink A. 

Carleton’s University Figure Skating Competitive Club will present a skate show after the festivities.

The Task Force on Financial Resources is set to release an initiatives report in January 2010, outlining ideas for how to maximize revenues and minimize waste and costs at Carleton.

Earlier this year, vice-president (finance and administration) Duncan Watt founded the task force.

“[The task force] helps others to engage in the Carleton community, and to ask questions such as ‘How are we wasteful?’ or ‘How can we generate revenue?’” said Watt.
