Carleton’s campus is comprised of multiple chapters, one being a publication called In/Words that is diving into the school year and Carleton community headfirst this fall.
“In/Words is a small press and literary magazine run out of Carleton University,” new editor Leah Mol said. “It supports local literature by publishing both quarterly issues and chapbooks.”
Interested in turning her writing into a career, Mol, also a journalism student, found In/Words to be a nice haven from the intensity of journalistic writing and editing.
“I got involved because I was interested in writing,” Mol wrote. “I’m a new editor, but I’ve been writing pieces for their publications for more than a year now.”
More than just a simple publication of student work, Mol finds In/Words adds flavour to Carleton’s campus and provides an outlet for students.
In/Words has sister publications such as Blank Page for first-year students, as well as fellow chapters like Vagina Dentata and The Moose & Pussy, both who have worked hard to expand their writers and readership internationally.
In addition to these publications, open mic sessions are held on the last Thursday of every month at the Legion on Kent Street.
It’s not a secret that these publications bring “some incredible writing to Carleton,” Mol said. “But there’s a lack of new voices. I think it’s really important that In/Words continues to grow, but to do that, there needs to be more support and involvement, especially from new students or people who don’t usually submit.”
