The Carleton Ravens women’s soccer team was knocked out of the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) playoffs after a 1-0 loss to the Laurentian Voyageurs at the Laurentian University Soccer Field on Oct. 26.
“It is always disappointing to lose in the playoffs,” Ravens head coach Fred Juett said in an email. “I think the team put [up] a good battle but unfortunately it was not enough.”
The Ravens wrapped up the 16-game regular season with a record of 7-4-5, and finished in fifth place in the OUA East division.
Earlier in the season, the Ravens took on the Voyageurs at MNP Park on Sept. 23 and won by a score of 3-1. Later in the season, the two teams played to a 0-0 draw at the Laurentian University Soccer Field on Oct. 15.
“I think every team goes into the playoffs with high expectations and our team had them as well,” Juett said. “I think we had a good team and with some luck in the regular season could have finished higher in the standings, which probably would have helped our chances.”
Through the first half of the playoff game, neither team was able to find the back of the net.
The Ravens only directed one shot on goal, while Carleton goaltender Rada Mintchev made four saves.
With only nine minutes remaining on the clock, Voyageurs midfielder Brianne Rodrigue was able to send a pass to forward Sam Selkirk, who buried the ball in the back of the net.
The Ravens were unable to reply with a goal of their own, despite generating more shots on goal in the second half.
Although the season has just wrapped up, Juett said the team is already looking ahead and preparing for next season.
“We will be working with our remaining players, as we lose some through graduation and look to add some new recruits,” Juett said.
Juett said he and his coaching staff plan on meeting to determine their focus for recruitment, and will host a recruiting weekend from Nov. 25-27 for players interested in soccer.
