The Carleton Ravens women’s hockey team experienced a tough weekend, with two losses to add to their regular season record.

The team’s first game on Jan. 22 against the McGill Martlets at the Carleton Ice House resulted in a 3-1 loss.

The Martlets started out strong as forward Olivia Sutter snatched up a loose puck in front of the Ravens’ net and went head-to-head with goaltender Katelyn Steele for a goal.

McGill doubled its lead off of a turnover at the 14:03 mark of the first period where Shana Walker scored a top-shelf goal past Steele.

The Martlets last and final goal sealed the deal at 2:33 into the middle frame off another turnover. Joanne Cagnianos sent a wrist shot past Steele, against the glove side.

Carleton’s Mackenzie Coney got the only home goal.

The Jan. 24 game against the Concordia Stingers saw a final score of 1-0 for the Stingers.

Claudia Dubois, the only goal scorer of the game, sent a point shot past Steele with 47 seconds left in regulation at 19:13 for the win.

Despite the loss, Steele had a 31-save effort and was named player of the game.

Head coach Pierre Alain said his team put up a good fight on the weekend, but admitted a key part of the team’s losses has been its offence.

“Defensively we keep opponents outside the middle,” he said. “We gave ourselves a chance to win, but we need to score.”

Although the Ravens’ chance for playoffs are slim, Alain said it’s important to remain hopeful.

“We are building. We have a young team and they really battled,” he said. “We’re not done . . . It’s about being in the moment and in the moment we can just give it our best.”

Alain’s Ravens will face the Montreal Carabins at the Complexe sportif de l`Université de Montréal Arena on Jan. 31.
